COVER REVEAL: 'True North' by L.E. Sterling

I read 'True Born' back in April, and I loved it. I'd fallen out of love with the idea of dystopians, because they all seem to regurgitate the same plot, making them predictable and bland, but 'True Born' revitalised my love for the genre. As soon as I finished it, I was adding the sequel to my Want To Read list, desperate to continue on with Lucy and Margot's story.

So when an email popped into my inbox last night asking me if I'd like to be involved in the cover reveal for the second novel in the series, 'True North', I jumped at the chance. I seriously don't think I've ever responded to an email that quickly!

I can't put into words how much I love this cover. I'm ecstatic that it matches the cover for the first book, because so many series have been getting redesigned halfway through and that's a huge pet peeve of mine. 

The thing that really grabs me is that byline. "It's not you... it's your DNA." Having studied psychology, I've always been fascinated by reductionist theories that you can't change who you are at a fundamental level, and if that's going to be dealt with in this book I know I'm going to adore it.

COVER REVEAL: 'Strange the Dreamer' by Laini Taylor (+ read the prologue!)

Hey everybody! I'm guessing most of you have already seen the cover for 'Strange the Dreamer', but I was invited to participate in the cover reveal yesterday - sadly some laptop issues stopped me from being able to post it in time, and I've only just managed to get up and running again.

Say it with me now: OOOOOOOOOOHHHHH! ISN'T IT PRETTY?! I actually think I prefer the UK cover to the US version, which is one of the only times that's ever happened to me. 

'Strange the Dreamer' is the first novel Laini Taylor is releasing after wrapping up her highly successful Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy (which I still haven't read...) but it should be a good book, based on the prologue: 

On the second sabbat of Twelfthmoon, in the city of Weep, a girl fell from the sky. 

Her skin was blue, her blood was red.

She broke over an iron gate, crimping it on impact, and there she hung, impossibly arched, graceful as a temple dancer swooning on a lover's arm. One slick finial anchored her in place. Its point, protruding from her sternum, glittered like a brooch. She fluttered briefly as her ghost shook loose, and then her hands relaxed, shedding fistfuls of freshly picked torch ginger buds. 

Later, they would say these had been hummingbird hearts and not blossoms at all.

They would say she hadn't shed blood but wept it. That she was lewd, tonguing her teeth at them, upside down and dying, that she vomited a serpent that turned to smoke when it hit the ground. They would say a flock of moths had come, frantic, and tried to lift her away. 

That was true. Only that. 

They hadn't a prayer, though. The moths were no bigger than the startled mouths of children, and even dozens together could only pluck at the strands of her darkening hair until their wings sagged, sodden with her blood. They were purled away with the blossoms as a grit-choked gust came blasting down the street. The earth heaved underfoot. The sky spun on its axis. A queer brilliance lanced through billowing smoke, and the people of Weep had to squint against it. Blowing grit and hot light and the stink of saltpeter. There had been an explosion. They might have died, all and easily, but only this girl had, shaken from some pocket of the sky. 

Her feet were bare, her mouth stained damson. Her pockets were all full of plums. She was young and lovely and surprised and dead.

She was also blue. 

Blue as opals, pale blue. Blue as cornflowers, or dragonfly wings, or a spring -- not summer -- sky.

Someone screamed. The scream drew others. The others screamed, too, not because a girl was dead, but because the girl was blue, and this meant something in the city of Weep. Even after the sky stopped reeling, and the earth settled, and the last fume spluttered from the blast site and dispersed, the screams went on, feeding themselves from voice to voice, a virus of the air.

The blue girl's ghost gathered itself and perched, bereft, upon the spearpoint-tip of the projecting finial, just an inch above her own still chest. Gasping in shock, she tilted back her invisible head and gazed, mournfully, up.

The screams went on and on.

And across the city, atop a monolithic wedge of seamless, mirror-smooth metal, a statue stirred, as though awakened by the tumult, and slowly lifted its great horned head.

If that doesn't make you want to pick up 'Strange the Dreamer', I don't know what will! Featuring a death AND a mysterious beast, that's the makings of a brilliant prologue, and I can't wait to find out more about what the story will entail. I also adore the appearance of the moths, which explains the image on the cover brilliantly!

COVER REVEAL! 'Mer-Charmer' (World of Aluvia #2) by Amy Bearce

Hey everyone! It's been a very long time since I participated in a cover reveal, but I am SO EXCITED to share the cover for 'Mer-Charmer' with you all.
'Mer-Charmer' is the second book in Amy Bearce's World of Aluvia series. I reviewed the first book, 'Fairy Keeper', when it was released last March and I really loved the book. It's a middle-grade story set in a magical world filled with supernatural beings, and all of the best mythological creatures are featured; it's pure fun! Since then I've been eagerly waiting for news about the second installment of the series.

I have no words. 

This cover is beautiful. The cover for 'Fairy Keeper' was more simplistic, but because the title font matches it's similar enough that it keeps the feeling of the series. Phoebe looks gorgeous: you can clearly see that she's a human rather than one of the merfolk (no tail!) which is a brilliant choice because it makes the story more interesting. This isn't a book where the protagonist is a magical creature, but because she's underwater there's definitely something special about her. 

I just love the colour scheme: the brights of the oranges and golds contrasting with the deep blues and greens... It's so visually pleasing. 

Here's the synopsis for 'Mer-Charmer': 

Fourteen-year-old Phoebe Quinn is surrounded by magic, but she can't muster any of her own. Her sister is a fairy keeper. Her best friends are merfolk. And all she does is dishes and housework.

When Phoebe finds out a terrible sea creature is awakening that preys upon the peace-loving merfolk, she becomes determined to help them, even though it means going with Tristan and Mina to their home and deep in the sea. 

Beneath the waves, Phoebe learns she's more like her sister than she realized. The merfolk are drawn to her, and she can sense the magic of the sea all around her. Magic is finally at her fingertips, but that's precisely why the stirring dark power under the waters decides it wants her most of all. 

Now she must not only help the peaceful merfolk escape this ancient enemy, she must master her out-of-control powers. If she fails, she will die and darkness will rise and enslave the merfolk once more. But embracing her full power could cost her the very people she loves the most.  

I'm glad Amy Bearce has decided to use this second book to focus on Phoebe, because she was the most under-used character in 'Fairy Keeper': the plot of the novel is that her sister is trying to rescue her, so she's busy being held captive! I'm thinking that the characters that we're already familiar with are definitely going to crop up, but it's going to be nice to follow a different protagonist - I really enjoy series that shift focus from character to character as they go on. 

I've been given the opportunity to read and review 'Mer-Charmer' before it publishes on May 9th, so keep your eyes peeled! I'm looking forward to reading this one, and I'm going to get to it as soon as physically possible.

COVER REVEAL: 'Picture Imperfect' by Jelsa Mepsey

Hello, and welcome to another brilliant cover reveal! This time, it's the cover of an adorable YA novel that is coming soon from Swoon Reads. Get scrolling and see:

I LOVE this cover. I think it's so simple and understated, but it's cute and fun and - most importantly - romantic! If you'd like to know more about 'Picture Imperfect', keep reading. 

Sixteen-year-old Max Prescott knows all too well the joys of cheating girlfriends and traitorous friends. He's not eager to have his heart trampled again, but money and a fresh start can mean the difference between happiness and a dark path with his name on it. 

So when Melly Hewson, a perky and enigmatic classmate, asks him to be her model for a year-long photography project, Max agrees. Melly Hewson is everything Max isn't. She's outgoing, witty and always knows the right words to say. And despite his best efforts, Max finds himself drawn to her. 

Still, he isn't stupid. He knows a girl like Melly will only use him and then never speak to him again. Besides, he's been to that rodeo. As long as he keeps his feelings off the market, he won't make the same mistakes as last time. 

Yet underneath Melly's sweet smile lies a secret she'd rather keep hidden. And as the year goes on and the photos pile up, Max and Melly will find themselves developing through the negatives, a story that when told could push them to opposite ends of their world. But the only thing worse than the truth is, the facade that surrounds them. 

This synopsis is really intriguing, because it's definitely alluding towards a lot of secrets so there is a bit of mystery surrounding what's going on in the plot, but it definitely seems to be reversing the stereotypes - the boy who doesn't want his heart broken and the girl who is likely to use him, when it's normally played out the other way around.
I'm interested to see what this novel ends up being like, and if you're interested too you should keep an eye out, as this book releases on September 22. You can already pre-order on Amazon UK and Amazon US, so get on that!

COVER REVEAL: 'House of Grimm' by Ashley Dawson

Phew, another cover reveal? There are so many exciting covers being announced recently that I cannot keep track of them all! I feel like I keep repeating myself, because I'm always so excited about the books - but this is the most exciting of all, because it's based on a retelling of the Brothers Grimm! Scroll down to see the cover, and there will be more information about the book underneath...

Ah it looks so ominous, walking down the path in the middle of nowhere with the stormy sky above you! I can imagine this one is going to be creepy as heck, and it sounds even creepier after you read the synopsis:

After her best friend is the victim of a grisly murder, Dora is dragged unwillingly into a frenzied hunt for answers in this riveting young-adult debut from Ashley Dawson. 

The town of Grimsby is home to horrid secrets, including the true identity of the homicidal book writers in the old estate on the hill--the Brothers Grimm. And Dora is only the latest in a long line of their fairy tale characters destined for an untimely end. With the youngest brother taking a liking to her, she must figure out how to rewrite her story with his help, before the eldest brother writes her off for good. 

It's such a unique spin on a classic tale, and I'm beyond intrigued to see how this one plays out. To combine young adult with a murder mystery is an aspect that isn't explored as thoroughly as it could be, but this story definitely excites my imagination! If you're as interested in 'House of Grimm' as I am, watch this space for more information on the book as we near release day.

COVER REVEAL: 'Antidote' by Taylor Hondos

If you haven't guessed yet, I love creepy novels. Zombies = good. Death and destruction = good. End of the world? Pretty much my favourite thing in a book. So 'Antidote' looks like it's going to be a novel I'm going to fall head over heels in love with, meaning I am extremely excited to be involved in this cover reveal. Scroll on down to see it...

Ooh, the cover is just as creepy as I'd anticipated! But I also love how simplistic it is; the really clear, crisp font has a brilliant juxtaposition with the busier background - this is one that I could look at for hours. If you aren't completely sold on the cover, here's the synopsis: 

Life sucks, and then you rot. No one knows how Dermadecatis is contracted, but its existence has changed everything for 18-year-old Lena, in this riveting debut from Taylor Hondos.

No contact with other people. 

Masks must be worn in public at all times. 

Four months ago men, women and children alike began to rot from the inside out, and the world as we know it changed forever. Life goes on, but now everything revolves around the need to survive and find a cure for Dermadecatis, the disease that Lena Alona's father discovered. 

Unfortunately for Lena and everyone else who is desperate to survive, her father's secrets died when he did.

This appeals to me utterly and completely. The imagery that's being invoked just from the disease name - Dermadecatis - is nausea-inducing; rotting from the inside out must be one of the most inexplicable pains possible, so having this happen to a large majority of the population must cause mass hysteria. Similarly, the cure for the disease being an unknown makes this a brilliant quest novel - find the cure, save the world - and I'm already trying to work out how on earth this could be fixed. My never ending anticipated releases lists has just gained another friend!

COVER REVEAL: 'The Girl's Guide To The Apocalypse' by Daphne Lamb

Happy Monday! Today, I'm pleased to announce that I'm involved in the cover reveal of 'The Girl's Guide To The Apocalypse' by Daphne Lamb. Scroll down to see it...

I absolutely love this cover. The female protagonist looks like such a badass, just chilling while the explosion goes off in the background, and the colour scheme is so pleasing on the eyes. The book sounds pretty damn good too!

Welcome to the apocalypse. Your forecast includes acid rain, roving gangs and misplaced priorities, in this comedic take on the end of the world as we know it, from debut author Daphne Lamb. 

As a self-entitled, self-involved, and ill-equipped millennial, Verdell probably wouldn't have ranked very high on the list of those most likely to survive the end of the world, but here she is anyway. Add in travelling with her work addicted boss, her boyfriend who she has "meh" feelings for, and a handful of others who had no businesses surviving as long as they have, and things aren't exactly going as planned. But despite threats of cannibalism, infected water supplies, and possibly even mutants, Verdell is willing to put in as little effort as she can get away with to survive.

I like to think that in an end of the world situation I would be a badass, looking after the people I care about and saving the world - but in all reality, I'm more likely to be like Verdell, taking the opportunity to do as little as I can! I think I'll really enjoy this novel, because I definitely think the character will be easy to relate to, and how much more awkward could the end of the world get, than with your boss and a boyfriend you don't care about?!

COVER REVEAL: 'The Silent Treatment' by Melanie Surani

Another day, another cover reveal! This time it's for a book that sounds equal parts intriguing and terrifying, with an extra dose of spine-chilling right in the middle. Interested? Well, scroll down to see the cover, and I'll give you so more information about the book right after...

I have never, ever, read a book about silent film or silent film stars, but I think this cover is such a perfect portrayal of what the book is going to be about. I think it's a very well-designed cover, so kudos to the creator!

If you aren't convinced, read the synopsis - I'm sure it'll hook you:

Twenty-eight year old Katrina Jaitley is rebuilding her life after escaping an abusive boyfriend. The last thing she needs is the mystery she stumbles on during a bout of retail therapy. I just think this sounds like such an intriguing story! I've definitely never heard of any other books like it, and that's something that already makes it stand out for me.

COVER REVEAL: 'Frost' by E. Latimer

First things first, I need to apologise for how little action there has been on my blog over the last couple of weeks! Life has gotten in the way, so I've had hardly any time to make posts - fingers crossed that should be changing over the next couple of days though, so watch this space.

Phwoar! I just love how menacing it looks; the juxtaposition of the sparkly snowflakes with the katana? Utterly badass. 

This is E. Latimer's first novel, but I loved her writing when I read 'Polaris Awakening' at the start of last month. 'Frost' is published on August 25, so it's going to be a little bit of a wait until it releases, but I definitely think it's going to be worth it. If you're not convinced just by the cover, read the synopsis below...

Megan Walker's touch has turned to ice. She can't stop the frost, and the consequences of her first kiss are horrifying.

When her new powers attract attention, Megan finds herself caught up in an ancient war between Norse giants. One side fuelled by a mad queen's obsession and an ancient prophecy about Ragnarok, the other by an age-old grudge. Both sides believe Megan to be something she's not. Both sides will stop at nothing to have her. 

Fire or frost. It's an impossible decision, but she'll have to act soon, because the storm is coming.

COVER REVEAL: 'Come Sit By Me' by Thomas Hoobler

Another day, another blog tour - this time in association with Booktrope publishing, who I need to thank massively for inviting me to participate in this cover reveal. If you're ready, scroll on down...

The boy who shot seven people in the school library is dead. But did his secrets die with him?

Something terrible happened at Hamilton High last year, and those who survived don't want to relive the past. But Paul has just arrived, and gets the same locker that the shooter used. He wants to know what really happened...and you know what curiosity did to the cat. 

It's such an ominous cover and synopsis combo, reminiscent of 'We Need To Talk About Kevin', or the first (and definitely best) season of 'American Horror Story'. I find school shootings very intriguing - the psychology behind them and the psychological effects that follow on for the survivors - so I'm sure this is definitely going to be the kind of book I will fly through, even though I will find it emotionally harrowing.
'Come Sit By Me' is released in July, so keep an eye out for this one.

COVER REVEAL! 'Midnight Burning' by Karissa Laurel

Another day, another cover reveal - this time for 'Midnight Burning', a new urban fantasy from Karissa Laurel! This cover reveal has been organised by Good Tales Book Tours, so a big thank you to them for letting me get involved.

That is one heck of a book cover. I love the fact that you can see the mountains right behind the city; it makes me think there's going to be some journeying in this novel, and it's going to be cold and spooky and that's all you really need to make a brilliant urban fantasy setting. I think this, combined with the blurb, definitely means I'm going to have to pick it up at some point - and I really like the fact that it sounds as though it's going to be an adult urban fantasy, which is something I haven't read in a long time. 

About the book:

Solina Mundy lives a quiet life, running the family bakery in her small North Carolina hometown. But one night, she suffers a vivid nightmare in which a wolfish beast is devouring her twin brother, who lives in Alaska. The next morning, the police notify her that Mani is dead. Karissa Laurel has always dabbled in writing, but she also wanted to be a chef when she grew up. So she did. After years of working nights, weekends, and holidays, she burnt out and said "Now what do I do?" She tried a bunch of other things, the most steady of those being a paralegal for state government, but nothing makes her as happy as writing. She has published several short stories and reads "slush" for a couple of short-story markets. 

Karissa lives in North Carolina with her kid, her husband, the occasional in-law, and a very hairy husky. She loves to read and has a sweet tooth for speculative fiction. COVER REVEAL! 'Infinite' by Erica Crouch

In some ways, I really wish I wasn't involved in the cover reveal today, because it marks the end of a brilliant series! With the reveal of the 'Infinite' cover, and it's release date approaching rapidly, Erica Crouch's Ignite series will soon be over. I'm beyond nervous about what is going to transpire in the final novel, but more on that later - first, you need to scroll down to see the BEAUTIFUL cover!

See! It's such a perfect ending to the series, and it fits in so perfectly with the other covers - I'm so proud of the designer for making them all so utterly perfect. Just look at how good they all look together:



'Infinite' is the third and final installment of the Ignite series, not including novellas, and the release date is set for June 16th, so it's not far away at all. The synopsis means I don't even think I can wait that long, because it's so nail biting!

I don't think it's just me that loves this cover, is it? It looks like a summery, cute contemporary, and I'm sure I'm absolutely gonna love this one when it comes out.

If that synopsis doesn't instantly grab you, I don't know what's wrong with you! I think it sounds like a great novel, and I can't wait for release day on May the 12th to finally read this one.

COVER REVEAL! 'Engage' (Ignite #2.5) by Erica Crouch

Back in February, I read the first two books in the Ignite series, and the first novella, within the space of a week and I loved them. Since then, I've been finding it SO HARD to wait for the second novella, 'Engage', but I'm happy to say that it's nearly here! And because it's nearly here, it's going to need its cover revealed, so if you wanna see it you should probably scroll down.

One word for this cover; WOW. The colour scheme is absolutely beautiful, and the entire thing just looks so intriguing. If you've already read the earlier books in the Ignite series, you'll know what I mean when I say that this novella is a prequel to Kala and Ana's appearance in 'Incite', and I can't wait to see what unfolds in this story. The synopsis is: 

Kalaziel is a terrible guardian angel: her temper’s shorter than she is, she swears, she’s missing a wing, and she sees no problem with letting man make their own choices—no matter how questionable. That’s what free will is all about, right? Her overseers disagree.

After she mishandles an assignment, Heaven strips Kala of her title and throws her back into training, hoping to reinforce the covenant of vows she swore to uphold as a guardian. But the angels’ motives aren’t as pure as they appear: they want to eradicate any opinions that conflict with Heaven’s code.

With a mass cleansing on the horizon, Kala discovers she is not alone in her insubordination; there are other angels who are restless with the stasis of Heaven and ready for change. Progress doesn’t come easily, though, especially when it means uniting ancient enemies to fight for a common cause.

COVER REVEAL! 'Volition' by Lily Paradis

I bought 'Ignite' by Lily Paradis a couple of weeks ago (meaning that it will be included in my December Book Haul blog when I publish it in a couple of weeks time), and even though I haven't read it completely yet I have been dipping in and out of it, and I'm completely in love with Lily's writing style.
This meant that when I saw there was an opportunity to be involved in a cover reveal for her second book, 'Volition', which is being published in early 2015, I jumped on it immediately, and can I say that I am overjoyed with how gorgeous this cover is.

AHHHHHHH! Isn't it beautiful? I for one absolutely LOVE it. Compared to the cover of 'Ignite', it's so much darker and that makes me so much more excited and intrigued for the story. 

If you haven't heard anything about 'Volition', this is the description that is on the back of the novel.

I am speechless. I mean, not many book blurbs absolutely grab me and make it impossible for me to miss a release, but this is one of those.

The people who have already read the novel can't seem to give it high enough reviews, so the hype surrounding this book is really high, and I'm beyond certain that it IS going to live up to that hype, so keep an eye out for my review when the book is released!
